Rook stared at herself in the small mirror that Lily held up in front of her muzzle. Deep, lustrous blue eyes framed by long brown lashes slowly blinked back at her. Rook took a step back to admire the lay of blue and purple bridle against her dun roan fur. There was no problem with Lily’s choice of tack—it was more than sufficient for the Gala. No, one thing that worried Rook the most was her rider’s decision to try out a new hair style that very morning. Rook’s light grey forelock had been curled into a complex corkscrew; her shining mane was tightly curled into two parts—one large curl to the right of her neck, the other on the left. Even her tail was in an immaculate spiral.
“You don’t like it,” Lily said, lowering the mirror.
Rook rolled the bit between her teeth, stalling. “It’s … different,” she said at last. Lily’s grin disappeared and she took a step towards Rook’s tack box.
“I can try and fix it …”
Blast it, Rook chastised herself, stomping a hoof. “No, no,” she said quickly in an effort to assuage Lily’s pride. “Different might just work in this case.” She peered over Lily’s shoulder to the arena beyond. There were the usual complex braids, but no one had their mane and tail styled like this. She stepped forward and nudged Lily with her shoulder. “You haven’t failed us yet.”
Lily took a deep breath; a slow smile crept across her face. “It wouldn’t hurt to have a fan on the judge’s panel,” she mused, straightening her jacket.
“Fan or no,” Rook proclaimed, lifting her elegant head, “I make anything look good.”
