Companion piece to: Daughter of the dragon hunter: Hunt 2014

They rested after several leagues of hard running in a small patch of grass just off the main path. While Haldus’ sides heaved with exertion and McKenna’s face streamed with sweat, Kuma felt energized by the entire experience. She danced in place, magic thrumming through her veins. Everything seemed so bright—all those browns and greens of the forest; even the grey of the sky was beautiful. The world was a wonderful place and she had to see and smell every inch of it.

“How long do you think it’ll take for that dragon to break free?” she heard McKenna ask Haldus.

“Hopefully not for a while,” the bay roan stallion replied. “Kuma drank two whole bottles … I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Kuma’s ears pricked and she raised her tail at the sound of praise in her sire’s voice. She’d done it—she’d stopped the dragon. That meant that she was a tried and true dragon hunter—just like her father!

McKenna and Haldus continued to speak of odds and time and dragons, which bored the little cemophora filly. She turned away and meandered away from the little clearing, following the siren call of magic. It tugged her along like a lead rope attached to a halter, drawing her towards a massive hole in the ground.

Here, the magic was strong, brushing against her physically and mentally. Kuma breathed in deep, drinking in the heady scent. Her wings chimed like tiny bells against her sides, reminding her that they were there. She looked back at the sharp, icy blades and wondered if she could actually fly. Furrowing her brow in concentration, she willed them to beat.

The pleasant chime turned into a foul cacophony. Kuma grimaced and dug at the grass near the hole, her wings folding automatically against her sides. So much for flying. Well, I guess there’s always a ride on Erebus and Dysis, she thought sullenly. It wasn’t as if she was going to get any bigger.

“Kuma!” McKenna called out.

The filly turned her head and watched as McKenna ran towards her, while Haldus ambled along behind.

“We told you not to run off!” the human woman chastised. “What if there are more dragons?”

Kuma shrugged. “I could handle it.”

Haldus snorted, half amused, half in exasperation. “Just like her dam,” he muttered, shaking his antlers.

Kuma beamed as McKenna ran her fingers through her hair, lips twisted wryly. “All right,” the woman said, “let’s get back on the trail.”

Kuma stared down at the hole, loathe to leave this place. Haldus stepped up to his daughter and nudged her shoulder. “Come, daughter …” He stopped and craned his neck, gazing down into the hole.

Kuma tossed her mane. “Isn’t the magic lovely, Papa?”

Haldus continued to stare down into the massive gap, his ears pricked. “Mac,” the stallion called out. “You need to see this.”

McKenna wandered over and stood between them, placing a hand on either shoulder. Holding onto their manes, she leaned over the precipice and gasped. Kuma shuffled, edging closer to get a better look. Her eyes widened at what she saw—deep in the hole was a vast treasure: gold coins and bars; gemstones as large as her hoof and some as big as her father’s head; swords and pikes and halberds; scepters and orbs of state; broaches and pins and cameos of all shapes and sizes.

A true dragon’s horde.

“We get to keep this, right?” she asked of McKenna and Haldus.

Haldus and McKenna gazed at each other. For a moment, Kuma’s gut sank, watching their faces slide from one decision to another. Finally, McKenna took a deep breath.

“Well,” she said, “you did defeat a dragon.”
